I WILL NOT PAINT GIRLS IN PINK DRESSES PART 2-DIX BAINES COLORADO FINE ARTIST ORIGINAL OIL PAINTINGS9/5/2016 The hour a day of painting became two, than three, than more and the more Dix Baines painted, the more he wanted to paint, and the more he wanted to paint everything in view. He did not want to paint the same thing over and over or in other words, as he put it, "...did not want to paint girls in pink dresses" for the rest of his life. As he practiced the skill of painting, he began to define exactly what he was about and stated it in his artist statement: "I am drawn to the things which speak to the senses; the light and atmosphere of landscapes, the impressions of a moment or place, and the spirit of nature and of people. It is important to me to strive as an artist to paint a variety of subjects and to paint each equally well. I paint often on location, or from life. Whether researching sporting life images, landscapes, or places from abroad, painting directly from the subject is essential to capturing the impression of what I see." -DIX BAINES He began reaching beyond the banks of the river and painting the views surrounding the river. He began exploring another of his passions, architecture, as he captured the beauty of the southwestern churches and barns he found along the way in his travels. The images became endless, as anything before him became fair game for a painting. And what about where it all began, the fishing images? They, like fly-fishing would always be a passion and continue to be part of his repetoire of paintings celebrating the life and beauty of this world. -Kathlyn Gogarty-Baines "Adobe Light on Ranchos de Taos" 30" x 22" oil on board $5300 Available through McLarry Fine Art Gallery @ 505.988.1161 "EvenFall" 18" x 20" oil on board $3400 Available through The Broadmoor Galleries @ 719.577.5744 "McPollin Farm" 20" x 20" print on canvas $600-$675 Available through Dix Baines Studio @ 720.353.2670 "Splash and Dash" 20" x 20" oil on board $3600

It was a bit like a pianist practicing day to day. He was practicing the craft of painting and did it religiously an hour a day. As his skill developed, an hour soon was not enough and he began taking his paints to work and paint on his lunch hour. He then would come home at night and paint into the early morning hours. When he started painting, he painted what he knew and what he loved, meaning anything having to do with the river. As an avid fly-fisherman he found beauty in the fish, the way the water interacted with the fish, the light on the river, and of course the fisherman on the river. Those early years were all about the paintings inspired by the river. In 2002, Sam Curtis wrote an article in Big Sky Journal about Dix's combination of his two passions; fly-fishing and painting. "I was on the Green River before a March storm. There was a complete mist-out. Light was coming through the fog, and everything was radiant. All the fishermen were silhouettes that had orange glows around them. And then the snow came in, and there was a midge hatch. First, the fish came up in slow rises. And then you looked across the river and saw hundreds of frantic heads and tails. The fishing was great, but I couldn't wait to paint the light." -Dix Baines Big Sky Journal "Two of One Heart" 16" x 20" Available signed, limited giclee on canvas $450-$500 Original SOLD "Yellowstone Cutthroat" 16" x 20" oil on board SOLD Yellowstone National Park Permanent Collection "Autumn Run" 24" x 24" oil on board SOLD Cover, Wildlife Art Magazine, September/Octrober 2002 "Summer Run" 24" x 30" oil on board SOLD

In my mind, as the non-artist, it should be a straight and quick line from painting beginning to painting end, but that is not quite how it happens. It seems to be a bit more like traveling a very crooked path, with committments from shows, commissions, and galleries pulling the artist off the straight course of start to fnish. And of course there is that little thing called inspiration. Somedays, the one at the easel feels more like painting a mountain scene than a waterscape. Dix Baines likes to have several paintings going at the same time for this very reason. This particular painting started on June 18th of this year and has now found it's way back on the easel, where it has been throughout the week. Personally, I love this painting. I love everything about it from the format to the color, not to mention that it is the view looking west across Sky Pond at Dix Baines Studio. Colorado sunsets are inspirational and unless you have seen one, you may not quite believe that yes they really are this color. -Kathlyn Gogarty-Baines In Progress June 20, 2016 24" x 30" oil on board The Beginning June 17, 2016 24" x 30" oil on board
"Evening Grandeur" 7 1/2" x 12 1/2" oil on board $1300
Available through the Broadmoor Galleries @ 719.577.5744 This paintings was a struggle from the get go, but in viewing the completed piece, it was definitely worth the effort. When growing up, Dix's Mom had him memorize the quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson: "That which we persist in doing becomes easier, not that the nature of the task has changed, but our ability to do has increased." Good thing that he persisted on this piece, as it is extraordinary. The magic than can often be found on a high mountain lake is captured here in this painting. The color, the light, the peace are all found in this painting and transport the viewer away from day to day life, to a place of refreshment and peace. - Kathlyn Gogarty-Baines OFF THE EASEL IN PROGRESS VIEW 7x12
My introduction into the world of art was through Dix Baines over 30 years ago. Before that, I use to think that a painting was just a painting and all the artist had to do was dip the brush in some paint and put it on the canvas to create a pretty picture. I had no idea that the job of an artist is more about the "Agony and the Ecstasy," just as described in Irving Stone's book about Michelangelo Buonarroti. Creating is a constant struggle for the artist, as they strive to transfer images, thoughts, and impressions through the tip of a brush onto canvas. In essence, a bit of the artist's soul is transferred onto the canvas as well. Dix decided to move outside of his comfort zone and try something new, as he started this new 7x12. It was the agony part of his life as an artist. This image has been hard, as he has strived to approach it differently. He laid a purple wash on the canvas and started the problem solving of the painting. It has seemed, from my perspective, there have been a lot of problems and several "not sure if this one will be worth finishing." Every paint stroke resolves one problem and creates another. It has been tough. Today though, it seems that the struggle has been worth it and the painting is beginning to turn the corner. This one is definitely a keeper and when complete, will be exceptional - Kathlyn Gogarty-Baines This year the Day Lilies have been extraordinary. It has looked like the entire yard was blanketed in orange. Four years ago a hail storm stalled over our house for an hour and completely snapped off nearly every Day Lily bud. It was a sad day. The light the night this photo was taken was unbelievable and back-lit and tipped the flowers so that they glowed. This is upper pond, which is one of three koi ponds at Dix Baines Studio.
GOOD NIGHT SKY POND - Kathlyn Gogarty-Baines This is where it all began...Sky Pond 2014 And this is where we are...Sky Pond 2016 Good Night Sky Pond!
Sky Pond, the third pond at Dix Baines Studio was first opened in Summer of 2014. For the past two years it has provided a continued abundance of subjects to paint. Everything from birds, to flowers, to spectacular Colorado sunsets, are possible paintings. We enjoy our paradise daily and thought others might enjoy a daily snap shot of our views. ENJOY! Good Night Sky Pond!
When I start a painting, after the gesso is dry, I cover the entire space with a tinted wash. This is what I use to carve out the initial image. This image was taken early on the first day. In progress 24x30 oil on board
