THE MAGIC CONTINUES-DIX BAINES COLORADO LANDSCAPE ARTIST

PROGRESS - September 28, 2016

It is the artist's job to find the extraordinary in the ordinary and no where is this more apparent than when an artist takes the everyday views, such as a basic adobe building, and composes the extraordinary. It was an intense day of painting today for DIX BAINES, that actually went into the night, but an amazing start that speaks of what is to come. It really is magic, watching the shapes of color merge together to create a beautiful image. I am always awestruck to see the blank canvas become something. I can never quite believe that  a 24"x30" canvas can be filled with paint from tiny brushes.
 It is magic indeed. -Kathlyn Gogarty-Baines

START - September 27, 2016

The magic never ceases to amaze me. I have watched DIX BAINES paint for over twenty years and it truly is magic to see him take an empty board and bring it to the point of a framed painting. People often ask him how long it takes him to paint an image, and before watching the process, I would have asked the same thing. I always thought that a painting starts by the artist taking paint to canvas, but now I understand that long before the actual paint on canvas, there is a great deal of research and thought in planning the image. Sometime researching means painting and photographing on location and then bringing the images back to the Studio and working through the composition of a larger piece. Other times, researching means going through a collection of photos that have been acquired just from living; driving down a  road, seeing a sunset over the mountains, or a flower bursting open. Once the artist has an image in mind, there is a lot of composition work. Will all the elements be included in the painting as they are in the photo? The electrical wires or poles? A road? A tree? A car? Will the season and time of day be as the artist saw when the photo was taken? Or will artistic license be taken to create the best composition. - Kathlyn Gogarty-Baines

Every season has magic of it's own. From the color, to the weather, and even to the smell of the season. Autumn is no exception.  The magic changes from location to location and capturing the images of Fall and putting them on canvas is a never ending pursuit for Colorado landscape artist Dix Baines. -Kathlyn Gogarty-Baines

Prior to leaving his job (1997), as a Project Designer with a prominent Design Firm to pursue a career as an artist, Dix Baines had the opportunity to work on the 5 star-5 diamond property The Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Now as an artist, things have come full circle as his original art is shown at The Broadmoor Galleries, which is located on the property of  The Broadmoor Hotel. Having worked in a field for ten years, where his focus was architecture, architecture will always be a draw for Dix as an artist.  Over the past six years of showing his work at The Broadmoor Galleries, Dix has enjoyed exploring the architecture of The Broadmoor through paint.  The Broadmoor Hotel is not so much about a place to stay, but more about the experience of being there and the rich history behind the property.

"Down by the river, we behold the light on or around us. Often unseen, but above, a bigger view; the 'windows of heaven' and the 'light in all things' streaming down. There is so much more to a scene, a deeper meaning in every view, even the spiritual life force within all things temporal, if we but look." -DIX BAINES

GESSO PLUS BOARD EQUALS NEW PAINTING - ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING OFF THE EASEL - DIX BAINES COLORADO LANDSCAPE  FINE ARTIST

Sometimes art is very serendipitous and happy little accidents happen. The first step to starting a painting is applying gesso to the board. Gesso is a white paint, that primes the surface and prepares it for the paint to come. Today, after I poured the gesso, this is what I saw. Maybe it's an omen for good things to come. Have a happy day and enjoy the weekend.

SEPTEMBER 13, 2016 - THE START OF A 7 1/2" x 12

Our Studio is one of art and music. I am the music side and Dix Baines is the art side. He listens to the piano go non stop most days and at the end of the day, I get to check out what magic happened on the easel that day. Pretty awesome existence to be surrounded day in and day out by art and music. Today, with piano lessons done, I headed up to the Art Studio to check out the progress on this 24x30 and instead found this painting (above) that he had started today. The composition is exceptional, but it is the atmosphere that drew me in. The painting speaks of exactly what Dix is all about;
light and atmosphere. I cannot wait to see where this one goes. Kathlyn Gogarty-Baines

I WILL NOT PAINT GIRLS IN PINK DRESSES PART 2-DIX BAINES COLORADO FINE ARTIST ORIGINAL OIL PAINTINGS

9/5/2016

 The hour a day of painting became two, than three, than more and the more Dix Baines painted, the more he wanted to paint, and the more he wanted to paint everything in view. He did not want to paint the same thing over and over or in other words, as he put it, "...did not want to paint girls in pink dresses" for the rest of his life. As he practiced the skill of painting, he began to define exactly what he was about and stated it in his artist statement:

"I am drawn to the things which speak to the senses; the light and atmosphere of landscapes, the impressions of a moment or place, and the spirit of nature and of people. It is important to me to strive as an artist to paint a variety of subjects and to paint each equally well. I paint often on location, or from life. Whether researching sporting life images, landscapes, or places from abroad, painting directly from the subject is essential to capturing the impression of what I see." -DIX BAINES

He began reaching beyond the banks of the river and painting the views surrounding the river. He began exploring another of his passions, architecture, as he captured the beauty of the southwestern churches and barns he found along the way in his travels. The images became endless, as anything before him became fair game for a painting. And what about where it all began, the fishing images? They, like fly-fishing would always be a passion and continue to be part of his repetoire of paintings celebrating the life and beauty of this world.
