When Dix Baines began painting in 1994 it was an hour a day. It was a bit like a pianist practicing day to day. He was practicing the craft of painting and did it religiously an hour a day. As his skill developed, an hour soon was not enough and he began taking his paints to work and paint on his lunch hour. He then would come home at night and paint into the early morning hours. When he started painting, he painted what he knew and what he loved, meaning anything having to do with the river. As an avid fly-fisherman he found beauty in the fish, the way the water interacted with the fish, the light on the river, and of course the fisherman on the river. Those early years were all about the paintings inspired by the river. In 2002, Sam Curtis wrote an article in Big Sky Journal about Dix's combination of his two passions; fly-fishing and painting.
"I was on the Green River before a March storm. There was a complete mist-out. Light was coming through the fog, and everything was radiant. All the fishermen were silhouettes that had orange glows around them. And then the snow came in, and there was a midge hatch. First, the fish came up in slow rises.
