SUNRISE, SUNSET - DIX BAINES COLORADO LANDSCAPE ARTIST

11/10/2016

Skies are captivating and no two, just  like a snowflake, ever seem to be the same. When our kids were growing up, we had a tradition that whenever one of us that an amazing sunset, they would pull everyone out to the street and we would stand in awe and watch. It is God's daily gift and one that is meant to be appreciated. As an artist, Dix Baines has had the opportunity to capture numerous sunsets and sunrises in his paintings. These images often start small and are part of the Annual Studio Auctions. This year two of his sunsets have made it into the "Notes and Brushstrokes" Auction, that is currently open for bidding. ENJOY!

COLLECTING SMALL- A PATCHWORK OF MEMORIES-DIX BAINES COLORADO LANDSCAPE ARTIST

11/7/2016

Small paintings are a wonderful way for a new art collector to get started and a seasoned collector to add to their collection, at an affordable price. Sometimes collecting small, such as the 5x7 paintings offered through the Annual Dix Baines Studio Auction "Notes and Brushstrokes," does not seem like much because, well they are so small and will get lost on a wall. The beauty of collecting small, however,  is many fold. As many artist's paint small and offer small paintings, collecting small allows for the collector to purchase paintings from a variety of artists and still stay within a reasonable budget. We began collecting small several years ago and have purchased paintings from two of our favorite artists and friends, Michael Ome Untiedt and Tim Deibler, who both offer 5x7 paintings . Michael Ome Untiedt  has a 5x7 auction each year called the Little Charlie Auction. Tim Deibler  offers 5x7 Specials  on his website. After having purchased paintings from both artists, as well as adding some of Dix Baines, that I received as gifts, we had enough paintings to group on a large wall. It is a patchwork of memories that brings joy everyday. By collecting small, one can purchase paintings year after year from favorite artists and grow a collection, that documents the artist career, development, and growth. Twice a year, August and November, Dix Baines paints a dozen 5x7 paintings that are sold only through the Studio at the Studio Auctions. In August at the "Summer Garden Party and Auction" and in November at "Notes and Brushstrokes" each original 5x7 oil painting starts with a minimum bid of $150. Those interested in purchasing, through the Studio Auctions, can bid on-line by entering their contact information and bid amount in the comment area beneath the painting of interest. Bids can also be made by contacting the Studio by phone or text (720.353.2670) or by attending one of the events. Frames and shipping is available for all of the paintings.

THE COLOR OF PLEIN AIR - DIX BAINES COLORADO LANDSCAPE ARTIST

11/1/2016

A few weeks ago, we drove to Santa Fe to deliver some new work to McLarry Fine Art Gallery . On the drive home we hit an incredible sunset. We both tried several times to capture the landscape, illumintated by the amazing sunset, but to no avail. The colors on the camera were faded, washed out or in general just wrong. I had heard Dix say many times that cameras just do not capture true color and now I was experiencing it first hand. The best way for the artist to capture the accurate color of a scene is to paint on location or plein air. The next week, Dix packed the car and headed back to New Mexico to spend a week painting on location. During the trip he started and finished this wonderful gem for our upcoming Studio 5x7 Auction "Notes and Brushstrokes,"  which is on Saturday, November 12th. Typically, a dozen unframed, original oil paintings are offered, with beginning bids of $150. As they come off the easel, they are posted on the Studio Auctions page on this website and are opened for bidding.  -Kathlyn Gogarty-Baines

Every painting is like a puzzle to be solved, with challenges and problems to be worked through. Often starting small is a way to work through some of the issues, before moving onto a larger canvas. Over the years Dix Baines has painted a number of 5x7 miniatures both to preview images for possible larger paintings and to sell at one of our two annual 5x7 auctions. The second of the auctions, "Notes and Brushstrokes,"  is always held the second Saturday of November and this year's event will be in two weeks on Saturday, November 12th. Typically, a dozen unframed, original oil paintings are offered, with beginning bids of $150. As they come off the easel, they are posted on the Studio Auctions page on this website and are opened for bidding. Here is a look back at some of the miniatures that turned into larger original oil paintings. -Kathlyn Gogarty-Baines

STARTING SMALL - DIX BAINES COLORADO LANDSCAPE ARTIST

10/29/2016

In music a composer will sometimes start with a "Prelude" to explore new ideas, before expanding it in to something bigger. Artists will often do the same thing. Last week, when Dix Baines was heading out one early morning for a painting trip in New Mexico, he captured an incredible image of the moon setting over the mountains in the pink tinged sky of a sunrise just down the street from our house. He couldn't wait to get back from the week long trip to explore the image. Yesterday he started that exploration by painting a 5x7 painting on panel and determined that this image will definitely be going big. Dix has been painting preludes or small images throughout the course of his career. Painting small is a way for him to visit an image and see if it is one that needs to go large. For the collector, both new and seasoned, it is a way for them to add to an art collection for a relatively small amount of money. For the last several years Dix Baines Studio holds two 5x7 auctions, the Summer Garden Party and Auction in August and Notes and Brushstrokes in November, where these small original paintings are auctioned with  a starting bid of $150. The gem he painted yesterday is the first of this year's Notes and Brushstrokes Studio Auction and can be bid on by following the link below the painting. There have been a number of exceptional 5x7 paintings sold through the auction and these are just a few. Check the Studio Auctions page often over the course of the next two weeks, as new images will be posted and open for bidding as they are completed

A GEM OF NEW MEXICO - CANONCITO - NEW MEXICO PAINT TRIP - DIX BAINES COLORADO LANDSCAPE ARTIST

10/25/2016

What a great painting trip. It had been way to long since I had been out painting. Much needed. The colors were amazing and I came home with great reference on two cameras, as well as the starts on 10 paintings. I couldn't help paint one of my favorite adobe churches, Canoncito, while near Santa Fe. I have always wanted to paint the image from this view, which is from the freeway, but a difficult shot to get. This time I was successful though and got a shot that I was able to use. Just finished up the painting today and it is framed and ready to be shipped to McLarry Fine Art Gallery in Santa Fe.

View from the freeway with the cement median covering the bottom half of the church. Not much to go on, except great light and color, but enough that with the reference from numerous trips to Canyoncito, it should be possible. -DIX BAINES

I started the painting at my campsite near Santa Fe. It was so windy that day, it wasn't worth trekking around trying to find views and I was pretty excited about this painting. -DIX BAINES

VIEWS EVERYWHERE - NEW MEXICO PAINT TRIP - DIX BAINES COLORADO LANDSCAPE ARTIST

10/21/2016

Just got back from a week long painting trip in New Mexico. Everywhere there were views of intense color, that gave inspiration for new paintings. It has been way too long since I took a painting trip. The camera typically just can't pick up the true colors of a scene and so getting out a plein air painting not only inspires, but gives accurate color reference. This time I even did a color board with mixed colors from some of the views I was painting. With our annual 5x7 auction just around the corner, I took panels to paint for the show and came back with seven 5x7 paintings in various stages of production. They will be priority this week in the Studio and posted on the auction page. -DIX BAINES

Good morning New Mexico. My first morning. Ya, crazy red.

What a spectacular array of color along the Rio Grande. Couldn't help but paint several 5x7 paintings of the views around the river.

FALL COLOR AT SKY POND - DIX BAINES COLORADO LANDSCAPE ARTIST

10/20/2016

For the artist it is important to be able to see the sites, eat the food, smell the smells, and in general be part of a view before being able to put it on the canvas.  Eight years ago, in the darkness of the recession, we were not able to travel anywhere due to a dwindling income and so we created a place for Dix Baines to go and create. With three ponds at Dix Baines Studio, the biggest being Sky Pond, there are always an abundance of views. With the beginning of every season there is a hope of what is to come and with the end of every season there is a beauty to enjoy. Here are a few views from Sky Pond at Dix Baines Studio. ENJOY! -Kathlyn Gogarty-Baines

SIGNATURES ON AND DONE - DIX BAINES COLORADO LANDSCAPE ARTIST

10/14/2016

Everyday when the work day is done, I take a peak into the Studio to see what progress has been made on what paintings. I never ask the artist if the painting is done, too much pressure, but I will know that the painting is complete and ready for the next step of varnish when I see the signature. Today was a double surprise, as I found signatures on both paintings. "Adobe Virga" (24x30) will be going to McLarry Fine Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico and "Sky Pond" is heading to The Broadmoor Galleries in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Busy week and always a great feeling to see paintings move out of the Studio to the galleries. The magic of start to finish of a painting, never ceases to amaze me. It truly is magic.

    Dix Baines

“I am drawn to the things which speak to the senses; the light and atmosphere of landscapes, the impressions of a moment or place, and the spirit of nature and of people. It is important to me to strive as an artist to paint a variety of subjects and to paint each equally well. I  paint often on location, or from life.  Whether researching sporting life images, landscapes, or places from abroad, painting directly from the subject is essential to capturing the impression of what I see.” -DIX BAINES
